Stop The Cough At Night

I received this email from my husband:

Back to My Normal Weight

Last week, somehow I managed to get my original weight back. I can wear back all my old clothes. My gynea asked me how I managed to get back my original weight so fast? To tell you the truth, I don’t have secret recipe. I only gain 10 kg when I was pregnant. It’s all in the tummy. When the baby is out, I only have 5 kg to reduce, and now all gone.

Actually, since I was teenager I was always under weight. Even I ate a lot, I still could not gain weight. If I am not wrong, I was only 42 kg, and my height is 162 cm. Only when I lived in US, I gain some weight to become 48 kg, and I maintain it until now.

I don’t exercise. At one time, when I walked every morning with my hubby, my weight reduced to 46 kg. Then when I got pregnant, the first few months I got bad morning sickness. I lost weight further, until my gynea asked me to eat more, or eat whatever food I fancy. At that time, my hubby had to think hard to persuade me to eat. Since all the food that I craved he could not find in Malaysia, he searched for the recipe in the internet and cooked for me.

Anyway, I am happy that I don’t have overweight problem.

Mommy Is Working

It’s been almost 7 years since I become stay at home mom. Previously I was working in the cookware company as a brand manager. I travelled a lot overseas, met a lot of interesting people, did product launching, sometimes I could see myself in the newspaper. It’s a very busy life and yet very interesting.

When I got married with my husband, I had to move to different country since he is from Malaysia and I am from Indonesia. Then I had my first daughter. Life is totally different since then. From working woman, now I am become a housewife and a mother. But one thing is the same. I still can earn money.

She is One Month Old Today!

My Newborn is one month old today. She is asking for milk every 3 hours. Sometimes less than 3 hours she’s already screamed. Every feed is about 90 ml or 3 oz. Thus total feed for 24 hours is about 21 to 24 oz. It is a lot for one month old baby, don’t you think?

When she was just born she was only 3.2 kg and 50 cm long. I don’t know her weight now, but I am pretty sure she gains a lot. Tomorrow we are going to see her pediatrician for check up and to get her second hepatitis B injection.

Actually she was much smaller than her sister. Her sister was 3.6 kg and 56 cm long when she was born. So probably she drinks a lot of milk in order to catch up.

Before I had my oldest daughter, I had to travelling a lot. Every year I had to go to Chicago, US to attend cookware show. My company had an exhibition booth there, where I had to stand there the whole day to meet our existing customers and showed them our new products, however, beside that we were also hoping to get new customers. Is newborn need to drink plain water?

When my older daughter born, this question never occurred to me, so somehow I never gave her any plain water. However, later on, I sometimes saw a mother gave her baby plain water. Then it hits me. Does baby, specially newborn, need plain water beside the one already mixed in the formula milk?

Then the other day, my mother in law told me to give my new born daughter plain water, since she “seems thirsty”.

I tried to googled that question, and this is my findings:

Baby less than 6 months are not suppose to drink plain water. They should have enough water from the one that mixed in the formula milk or from your breast milk. The reason is because water has no nutrient and giving water will fills their tummy so they don’t want any milk.

Of course, if your baby has constipation, or some other problem and your pediatrician advise you to give extra plain water, you must follow.

Mama, Me, and Baby

This is what my older daughter drew 2 days ago. When I asked her who are they. She said, it’s Mama, me and baby. I could see me and her, but at first I could not see the baby, until she pointed out that the baby was in my lap.

Use Your Bar Soap Until Totally Gone

If you are using soap bar, don’t throw away when the bar become too small. You still can use it until finish. How?

You soak the soap with water about 5 minutes, or until become slightly soft. Now, you can attach that small bar of soap with the new one by pressing it together until the small soap stick together to a new one. Now you can use the new bar soap as usual. When the new one become too small, you can repeat the process.

Since last year, I tried to sell my knitting pattern online. Since it is a PDF file, there was no need for me to print out. If people bought my pattern, I just sent it out by email.

Jet Lag

Since my husband is back from Europe last Sunday until now, he still could not get over his jetlag. At night could not sleep, only able to sleep about 6 in the morning and only woke up at noon.

Based on my experienced travelling to different country with time difference, I notice that normally I did not have any problem with Jetlag when I was there, but when I arrived back home, I always have problem adjusting the time. I don’t know why.

Anyway, because hubby can not wake up in the morning, nobody drive my daughter go to her kindy. It happen also that my father in law car need to be repaired for a whole week. Thus, he also can not drive her.

Hopefully everything back to normal next week.

My friend just told me that she is going to have Lasik. When I told my husband about it and asked him whether he is interested to have Lasik, he said that Lasik is for rich people, or for woman who wants to look pretty. As for him, well, he is happy with his glasses and no need to spend a fortune to do Lasik.

Back to Normal Weight

Today I went to see my Gynea for check up. It's been 20 days since I gave birth. When they weigh me, I got a surprise that I already back to my normal weight before pregnant. The gynea even ask me what is my secret. Why I can get back to my shape very fast.

To tell you the truth, I don't have any secret. Since I was teenager, I don't have any problem with reducing weight. Now, gain weight is the problem. I always forced myself to eat to even maintain my weight.

Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody

If you like to read Manga, you should watch Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody which is adapted from very popular animated series and a best-selling manga series by acclaimed Japanese artist Tite Kubo. Now if I were to name a manga character, I would name her Kimi (since I am a woman, of course my manga’s main character is a woman), which means “She who is without equal”. Now, how cool is that for a name. Very delicate sound and yet have a powerful meaning.

She Cut Her Own Hair!

Last Sunday, I got a shock of my life. My older daughter somehow managed to climb chair and took my scissor to cut her own hair. She cut all her fringe and some of the side. Ohhhh! I really really had a broken heart. Her hair is very long and nice. I never cut her hair since the day she born. I normally only trim her fringe every 2 months so it won’t get her eyes. Now all gone. It will takes months to grow back. And the side, it will take longer to grow back.

Now, she looks so horrible with no hair in the front. Not to mention one side is longer than the other side. Her father was also broken heart, because he admired her long hair and always liked to comb her hair.

Lucky thing that she didn’t hurt herself, because the scissor that she took was a very sharp scissor. Normally, I let her cut paper using scissor. I gave her special scissor for her to play. I always supervise her when she play with it. Recently, because she was naughty, I didn’t let her play with her scissor, who knows that she managed to get my scissor instead.

One day my older daughter did funny thing when she went to the toilet. Instead of sitting on the toilet bowl as usual, she is standing in front of it.

Me: What are you trying to do?
DD: I am trying to pee like papa.

Mathematics is my favorite subject. I used to love it until my last year in high school. I did not like the way my teacher explained it. Somehow he managed to make things more difficult. Then I lost interest and did not pay attention when he teached. Now the problem was, once you didn’t not understand the basic, you could not catch up. Until now, I really could not understand about integral, derivatives, etc.

As a mother of 2 young children, I don’t think I will have problem coaching them about mathematics up to middle school level. Above that, I am not really sure.

Need to be Punished Husband

My husband went to Germany last week. He asked me what I want him to buy for me. I asked him to look for a certain moisturizer. I gave him the target price in Euro. If more than that, no need to buy as I can buy it here.

He also asked me whether I had US Dollar. If I had, he wanted to bring it with him for emergency money. OK, I gave him USD 500,-

Last saturday, he arrived and he gave me the moisturizer. When I asked him to return the USD 500, he only return USD 500 minus the cost of the moisturizer!!!!

Learn to Read and Write

Yesterday, I got the progress report card and the result of her exams of my older daughter. She is going to be 4 this coming October. She started attending pre-kindergarden since this January and that was already considering late. Most children started as young as 2 or 3 years.

Actually I started teaching her to recognize alphabet since she was 2 years old using jigsaw puzzle. Within 3 months she already knew A to Z. She learned very fast because for her it was like playing. However, I only taught her uppercase letters, and now in her kindy, they are teaching her lowercase letters. It made her quite confused.

When I taught her to write, she refused. She just didn’t want to write. I did not force her, because I did not want her to be afraid. Then later on when she started kindy and on the second day the teacher asked her to write, she started to cry. Luckily, I managed to persuade her to write.

Sometimes it amazed me that children this age already have to go through homework and exams. I remember last time I started attending kindergarden when I was 5 years old, and most of the time we were only playing. No writing, no spelling, no homework and no exam. I only learn how to write when I was 6 years.

If you have problem with body odour and already tried many things and still not successful, try to put toothpaste. You can do it while you are taking a bath. After soaping and wash as usual, you squeezed about 2 milimeter of toothpaste. Apply evenly under your arm. Do the same to the other side. Rub gently for about 1 minutes, and leave it for about 2 minutes before you wash it clean with water. That's it.

How to Stand An Egg?

Bachang are glutinous rice dumplings that are made every year during the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, to celebrate Duan Wu Jie. Anyway, during that day, my mom always tried to stand eggs on end as many as she can. She said it’s easier to stand an egg during that day.

Yesterday is Bachang day, so after hang up the phone with my Mom, I tried to stand an egg. True enough within seconds I could stand it.

Story of My Compact Powder

I had a funny story regarding my compact powder. Well! It was not exactly funny, but at least for me it was.

Actually I bought this compact powder by mistake. I was in a business trip to US, and was on transit in Japan airport, Narita. There was a cosmetic shop there. Since at that time I used one of Japanese brand skin care, I thought I wanted to buy some there, since I was in Japan off course the price should be cheaper, right?

When I calculated and exchanged the currency to my currency, I found out everything was very cheap. Then I spotted one of compact powder that was very interesting, the brand was Guerlain. Well, not actually Japanese brand, but since it was cheap and the packaging was very pretty, I thought why not. Then I bought one. After I bought this compact powder, I thought I also wanted several of the skin care as gift.

Suddenly, I heard somebody’s conversation behind me:
"What is the exchange rate now?”
"Oh it's 1 USD = .... Yen”

I forgot exactly how much, but the point was, my calculation was totally wrong. I was missing 1 zero behind. Now everything was become too expensive. Luckily, I haven't bought the skin care, but I already bought the compact powder and I could not return it.

Well, it was already 8 years ago, and I am still using it. Of course the original compact powder already long gone, and I already bought many refills. The refill itself was not so expensive.

Decorative Wall

I am staying in a house with 4 rooms. There is one room downstairs and three rooms upstairs. Nobody stays in the room downstairs. Mainly we use it as a store room.

Upstairs, one room is occupied by my MIL and FIL. Me and my husband occupied in the other room. There is one empty room upstairs that we plan to use it as nursery room. At this moment both of our daughters sleep in the same room with us.

We actually already plan and discuss how we are going to decorate the nursery room. We will paint the wall white with pink accent. Probably paint 1 side of the wall pink as a point of attraction where we can hang their photos there.

Sleeping is Good

My newborn baby always sleep. She only woke up when she is hungry. After fully fed, she will fall to sleep again. It's different story with my older daughter. When she was a baby, she was very fussy. Very difficult to sleep. She would be pretending (probably it's just my imagination) to sleep. Once I put her to the cot, she would be screaming again. Those days, I had not enough to sleep.

My mom always used to say that baby who is always sleeping later on they will be smart. It's because when they sleep, their brain have time to grow and develop. I am not sure whether this is true or not.

At this moment, I am co sleeping with my baby. For me it's easier. Also from the latest research it seems that this is the safest way for baby to sleep. There has been a lot of media lately claiming that sleeping with your baby in an adult bed is unsafe and can result in accidental smothering of an infant. However, if we compare it with SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) as a whole then the number of accidental deaths in an adult bed is only 1.5% of the total cases of SIDS.

If These Pants Could Talk!

To tell you the truth, I am not a jeans person. I don’t look good wearing jeans. However, I do have several jeans and one in particular I wore it more often than the other. It is very comfy and looks not bad on me. OK, I admit it, I wore it EVERY time! If pants can talk, probably they are screaming already: Oh No! Not me again! Wear something else!

Ever wondering what a day in their life is like? My jeans will be started at 8 in the morning and ended at 8 at night. So it’s about 12 hours of work. During those 12 hours these pants have to endure all the abuse, they have to sit on dirty chair, nice chair, full of nails bench, full of ant bench, full of sticky candy sofa, and so on. Not to mention serve as a cleaner when your hand is wet or dirty and somehow you can not locate those tissues or towels. Yup! Not exactly a nice day for a pair of jeans.

Spaghetti with Clam (Vongole)

The spaghetti with clams are a Neapolitan dish based on pasta and clams. Based on a soffritto of garlic and olive oil in which the clams must be open to the lively fire in a large frying pan. After a few minutes clams open (if still alive) and issue a liquid that provide the sweet taste of this dish.

The spaghetti should be cooked first before mixed and cook together in a pan sauce of clams, and supplemented with fresh chopped parsley.

Yummy! This is my favourite dish. First time I ate this dish was when I was on my business trip to Sinapore. My boss invited me and our customer to eat in Italian restaurant and he recommend me to eat this dish.

Now, I can't cook. I don't like to cook. Although actually my day job is involving selling cookware. However, my husband can and love to cook. Thus, when he found out that I like this dish, he relentlessly looking for this vongole recipe. Finally, after watched a particular episod of Jamie Oliver cooking show, he tried the recipe, and I really love the taste. It's simple to cook and the result very yummy.

Forget How to Look?

As I mentioned before in my previous post that I got another baby girl.
This is conversation between me and my older daughter:
DD (Darling Daughter): Mama, look! This is Banana.... (point at the banana picture)
Me : Yes! Very clever! (But, I did something else and didn't look at her)
DD : Mama, you didn't look at me. Please look at me!
Me : OK...OK... Wait! (still doing something else)
DD : Mama! How come now you forgot how to look at me?

I think it's my fault that I was ignoring her in the first place. I know that my older daughter feel unsecure about her position after the arrival of the new baby.
First she was not happy that she has to sleep with the grandparent for a week while I was in the hospital and the first few days afterward. She even said to her grandmother that mama and papa don't want her anymore.

When I was back home, I tried to be with her as much as I can like normally I did before the arrival of the new baby. I also tried to get her involved, like asked her to pass the milk bottle, or diaper, or just simply look the new baby together.

I hope she can get through this period fast.

Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in United States, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. Since Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday may be as early as the 23rd and as late as the 29th of November. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employers give the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. Retailers often decorate for the Christmas season weeks beforehand. When I was studying in US last time, I used to go shopping during black Friday with my friends. I was eyeing one particular leather jacket that can burn a hole in my pocket. Thanks to Black Friday shopping I could get it cheaper, although lots of efforts went into it (including kicking, elbowing, cursing, etc).

Caesarean or Normal Delivery?

I just delivered my second daughter. This time by normal birth. I tell you that I prefer C-Section method. The first baby, actually I want to try normal delivery, however since her position was faced up and I could not dillated fully for 12 hours, finally my gynea decided to do C-section.

The after-math, both are as painful. The different is, normal delivery, sitting is painful. Because I have stitches in my perinium. And because of the pushing during delivery, all my bone now is aching.

I like to eat rice with chili. In fact I can't have good appetite to eat if I don't put chili on my rice. I think this is the habit that start since I was small.

I still remember when I was small, my grandmother always put chili on my rice when I didn't have any appetite to eat. Then later, I can't eat without one.

Price Increase

Now everything is gone up in price. A few months ago I still managed to buy milk for Lauri for RM 60 something per can, now already RM 70 something. However, salary no increase at all. What to do? I think we must cut out our spending. Reduce eat out, reduce unnecessary cost. If possible I also want to increase my income, since in another week or so, I will have another family member. Yes! my baby girl is due in 10 more days!

Dangerous Feeding Bottle?

I hear this from my friend. It seems that a lot of feeding bottle for baby that is made from plastic is not safe for baby. The reason is because it contained BPA or Bisphenol A.

Researchers tested 19 baby bottles purchased in nine U.S. states and Canada. Bottle brands included Avent, Dr. Brown, Evenflo, Disney, Gerber and Playtex. When the bottles were heated to 175 degrees F (80 degrees C), every one of them leached bisphenol A at about 5 to 7 parts per billion. The report also suggested that because of the chemical makeup of bisphenol A, it may leach more in fatty or acidic liquids, such as milk or apple juice, than in water.

The New Media Expo: Brings Together Podcasters and Bloggers

Have you attending an EXPO before? I did. Many times. Today I found out that there is EXPO for online audio and video creators that brings together podcasters and bloggers from around the USA and the World!

I love gold. I always like to buy gold jewelry.

When I started to work and earned my own money, after pay-day, I always went shopping to buy gold bracelet, or necklace, or ring.

My parent always encourage this hobby of mine. They always said that buying gold is a good habit. Better than spend the money to buy clothes or bag or shoes. If you need money, you can always sell your gold.

Now, gold price is crazy. See table below. How I wish that I bought more gold.

Buying House in Penang

Buying house is always my obsession. I don't like to rent house. I prefer my own house. My logic is rather than pay the rent better use the money to pay the installment. If you rent, in the end of the day, you ended up with nothing.

However, I find that landed property in Penang is very very expensive. I think it's because Penang is a small island, so land is limited. I also notice that the price of landed property here is always increase and never decrease. It's a good investment if you can afford it.

My New Camera

In the end, I got Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 camera. Not Canon. The reason is because hubby got Minolta SLR camera, and we still can use his old lens. I still haven't read the manual yet, and hubby still busy playing with it the whole day. Thus, I have to wait my turn to learn to use it.

Active Toddler

My daughter is a very active toddler. When my parent come to visit me, they were amazed to see the different between me when I was a toddler and her. According to my mother in law, my husband also a very good toddler last time. So, why my daughter is totally different from us?

I always thought that children nowadays very active compares with the children in my generation (possibly because the milk, food and the environment), until my daughter went to pre-kindergarden. I can see that not all children very naughty like my daughter. Most of them is very good. She is among the hyper-active one. The one that can not sit still and always like to run around. In the class, she also can not pay attention very long. Her mind is always wandering somewhere after sometimes, or she play with something.

Then what makes her so active? Somebody please tell me. Is it because both me and my husband very good, now our daughter become hyper-active just to balance it? Hahahahaha!

Can a family with income RM3,000 survive in Malaysia????

Let's do some simple calculations here.
In Malaysia, the average family income is RM3,000 /month (where father works, mother doesn't). I understand there are many families whose monthly income does not reach RM3,000, but, to make things simple, let's take RM3,000 as the figure. Ok lah, right? Okay, let's start rolling with a family which has Papa, Mama, 1 daughter and 1 son. Ngam-ngam .... Calculation starts.
Electricity and water bill: RM100 (No air-con, No home theatre, No water heater ... ok?)
Phone bill ( Telekom): RM100
Meals for a happy family: RM775 (3 meals on RM25/day, RM25 for 4 persons...?)
Papa makan / teh-tarik during working hrs: RM155 (RM5/day, RM5 ... can eat what?)
Car repayment: RM400 (A proton saga aeroback, 7 yrs repayment)
Petrol (living in city, traffic-jam): RM300 (go to work, bring son to school, only can afford one car running)
Insurance: RM650 (kids, wife and myself)
House repayment: RM750 (low cost housing repayment for 30 yrs, retired still have to work to pay!)
Tuition: RM80 (got that cheap meh? i don't think so)
Older children pocket money @ school: RM20 (RM1/day, eat bread?)

Let's use a calculator to total up... WALAO EH! Shit! RM3,610 already... EPF belum potong, income tax lagi........oledi RM3,610 ... How to survive!!

Get Your Priority Straight

The other day I watch Oprah show. It’s about couples that have a lot of debt. Their spending is more than their income. Most of the time they paid using credit card, but by the time the due date to pay, they can not afford to pay. The balance keep increasing so does the interests.

I think that is the disadvantage of using credit card. Sure you don’t have to pay right away when you go shopping, that is why you don’t feel that you spend your money. However, in the end of the month you still have to pay, and that is when you can feel it.

When you don’t use credit card, and only bring cash, you can reduce the impulse buying. You will think for a moment, whether your cash is enough or not. If your cash is not enough, then you won’t buy it and probably think to get it the next day. However, the next day, it’s another different story, and in the end you ended up not buying it.

Cost

I am trying to calculate the expenses of my daughter every months:
Milk, she drinks Enfagrow milk. She can finish 1 can (1.8 kg) in 10 days. Thus in a month I have to spend about RM 70 x 3 can = RM 210,-
Diaper. Yup, she still wear diaper at night. I use Mami Poko, which is about RM 1/diaper. Thus in 30 days costs me RM 30,-
Her pre-kindy costs me RM 175/month.
Thus total is about RM 415,-

Pneumococcal Vaccine

This is new vaccine that recently being introduced in here. My daughter had already vaccinated by this. It’s very expensive. I guessed because it’s new.

What is Pneumococcal Vaccine?
The pneumococcal vaccine (or pneumo vaccine for short) protects against pneumococcal infection.
This infection can cause diseases such as pneumonia,septicaemia and meningitis.
Children are offered pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) at two, four and 13 months, with people who are 65 and over being routinely offered pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) to protect against pneumococcal disease.

However, the other day, my friend, who is a Doctor just told me that there is a speculation that this vaccine can caused Autism. Not sure whether that is true or not.

Internet

My Internet connection not very good today, in fact, yesterday also not very good. I am not sure that I can post this. Cross my finger.

Nowadays, people (read: me) depend on the internet too much. If one day without internet, I will feel restless. I need to check my email. I need to blog. I need to surf the internet. It's an addiction I tell you. It's like a fish need water.

I am also thinking to do business online. I must survey the market first whether there is a demand. I will talk about that in detail later.

Baby Name

My due date is on 26 May, but until now I still haven't a clue what I should name my baby. I want a name that is not too common or too plain. However, also not too difficult to pronaunce. Must start with alphabet that is somewhere in the middle, so next time when she is in the list, she won't be called the first or the last. At first I want it started with J (my husband initial), but I can't find interesting name started with J.

My first baby, since my name start with L, I also want her name to start with L, then I look up in dictionary and find one that interest me, so I used it. But, now, I can't find one started with J that interest me. I guess I have to start with different alphabet.

Probably it works on some people, but I don’t like this kind of system. Not for me.

Uphamol vs Panadol Suspension for Children

I always give DD Uphamol 250 everytime she got fever. However yesterday I run out of it although normally I keep stock at least 1 bottle. It seems I used all of it already. Somehow the pharmacy where I use to buy medicine didn’t carry that medicine anymore. They offers the substitute Panadol suspension. Since DD is only 3 years old, I choose the one that for 1 to 6 years.

However, at home, when I read the instruction, I just realized that I need to give more than I used to give if I use Uphamol.

You see, normally I gives DD 5 ml (her pediatrician prescribes this), but when I read the instruction in Panadol for 1 – 6 years, I need to give 6 ml to 10 ml.
It’s very difficult to give 5 ml to DD somemore now I have to give more?
Furthermore the opening of the bottle is so small that I can’t insert my syringe in (I use syringe to feed the medicine to DD).

I asked my DH to look for Uphamol in another pharmacy, but he also could not find it. This time he bought Panadol for 6 years and above. This time, I can give the same amount (5 ml), but the solution is so thick that I can’t pour it out.

I think I have to really hunt for Uphamol 250. Panadol is not my type.
