My mother in law had an interesting ancestor. Her grandfather was a minister during the end period of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911). During the revolutionary military uprising (the Wuchang Uprising) in 1911, he sent his wife and his son to Malaysia with a promise that he would follow afterward. After travelling by boat for months, they finally arrived in Pahang, which is a state in Malaysia safely.
However, the husband never arrived in Malaysia. It was not known whether he got killed during the revolution or he managed to run away but the ship sank. There is another possibility which is that he stayed in China and lost contact with his wife, thus got married again with other women. If this is the case, then we have unknown relatives somewhere in china. Another possibility is that he managed to escape, landed safely but in a different part of Malaysia and lost contact with his wife.
It’s very mind boggling to think that we could probably have other relatives out there somewhere.
