Like Grandpa

Since today is Saturday, my older daughter didn’t have to go to her Kindy. Instead she went out with her grandma and grandpa.

I put blouse and new jeans on her. Normally she wore dress and never wear long pants before. When she realized that we wore a pair of jeans, her first comment was: Mama, I wore pants like Grandpa!

Princess and A Horse

This is my first daughter playing with the horse toys that the father bought from IKEA. She pretended that she was a princess just being rescued by a prince that rode a horse. Off course as for the prince, she just had to imagine him. However, if the father or the grandfather was there, they could become one. Hahahahaha!

Crossed Eyed?

My mother in law last time, whenever she saw a baby she always commented: That baby has crossed eyes. If only one to two times, I can understand, but this is EVERY TIME.

Then when I got have first daughter, my mother in law, my mother in law’s sisters, my brother in law and my sister in law, also commented that my daughter had crossed eyes. Of course they didn’t say it in front of me directly, but I still could hear them.

I felt funny that how come they always commented crossed eyes on babies. Then I did a bit of research. Here are what I found:

Newborn babies not only have unique reflexes, but also have a number of physical characteristics and behaviors that include the following:
- Head sags when lifted up, needs to be supported
- Turns head from side to side when lying on his stomach
- Eyes are sometimes uncoordinated, may look cross-eyed
- Initially fixes eyes on a face or light then begins to follow a moving object
- Beginning to lift head when lying on stomach
- Jerky, erratic movements
- Moves hands to mouth

New Game

In my previous post, I wrote about my older daughter who loves to watch TV. Not only watching TV, she also likes to play games using my laptop. Of course the games that she plays are educational games.

It was my husband that introduced all those games to her, although actually I didn’t really approve that. The reason is because I need to use my laptop. Probably I should buy desktop for her to use.

My husband likes to play games too. He could spend the whole night played games until forgot to sleep (although he still remembered to eat!). He tried to persuade me to play, but somehow playing games does not interest me at all. I have different hobby.

Speaking of games, there is a new games released by NCSoft called “Dungeon Runners”. In this game, players can obtain magical Bling Gnome that eat their unwanted items and turn them into gold (by taking a golden squat, see picture below). Boy! How I wish I got this Bling Gnome in real life.

Baby's Reflex

When I was in the hospital, just delivered my youngest daughter, one of my husband’s auntie came to visit. At that time I was nursing the baby. When she saw it, she made a comment,” Wah, why your baby is so clever, can immediately suck. Who teach her?”

Do you ever wonder how come newborn can immediately sucking, I mean who teach them?
Much of a newborn's movements and activity are reflexes or involuntary - the baby does not purposefully make these movements. As the nervous system begins to mature, these reflexes give way to purposeful behaviors.

Reflexes in newborns include the following:

Root reflex: This reflex occurs when the corner of the baby's mouth is stroked or touched. The baby will turn his/her head and opens his/her mouth to follow and "root" in the direction of the stroking.

Suck reflex: When the roof of the baby's mouth is touched with the breast or bottle nipple, the baby will begin to suck. This reflex does not begin until about the 32nd week of pregnancy and is not fully developed until about 36 weeks.

Moro reflex: The Moro reflex is often called a startle reflex because it usually occurs when a baby is startled by a loud sound or movement. In response to the sound, the baby throws back his/her head, throws out his/her arms and legs.

Tonic neck reflex: When a baby's head is turned to one side, the arm on that side stretches out and the opposite arm bends up at the elbow. This is often called the "fencing" position.

Grasp reflex: With the grasp reflex, stroking the palm of a baby's hand causes the baby to close his/her fingers in a grasp. The grasp reflex lasts only a couple of months and is stronger in premature babies.

Babinski reflex: With the Babinski reflex, when the sole of the foot is firmly stroked, the big toe bends back toward the top of the foot and the other toes fan out. This is a normal reflex until the child is about 2 years old.

Step reflex: This reflex is also called the walking or dance reflex because a baby appears to take steps or dance when held upright with his/her feet touching a solid surface.

Overweight Newborn?

On the last check up, my younger daughter weight was become 4.43 kg or 9.77 pounds. At birth she was 3.2 kg or 7.05 pounds. It means she gains about 2.72 pounds or about 33 ounces.

In the first month of life, babies usually catch up and surpass their birthweight, then steadily continue to gain weight. A weight loss up to about 10 percent of birthweight is normal in the first two to three days after birth. However, the baby should have gained back to his/her birthweight by about the 10th or 11th day. While all babies may grow at a different rate, they should gain about 1 ounce each day up to 1 month of age.

Thus I think my baby surpass that 1 ounce a day gain.

Anyway, when I asked my pediatrician whether my baby is overweight, since she wants to drink milk all the time, she laugh and said that my baby weight is normal. She said that the first 3 months baby tend to drink a lot, but after that she might refused to drink milk. Thus, give her milk when she wants it now, since this is the opportunity to gain weight.

Long time ago, when I went for holiday to Europe, Holland was my first country destination. This was my first overseas trip and I was so excited. It was spring time, and all the flowers were blooming nicely.

Then, I saw the famous flower, the one that I had been reading about and only abled to see it in the magazines. The Tulips! In real person… or should I say… in real flower…….Hahahahaha!

Watching TV

My older daughter is a TV junkie. She spends most of her time in front of TV watching cartoon at least 3 hours a day. I know this is not a good habit, but I got things done when she watched TV.

Last time when I was a kid, I rarely watched TV. I spent most of my time playing outside with my cousins and neighbor friends. I lived in a “kampong” and my cousins live nearby. While our mothers were cooking and cleaning, we were playing outside until time for lunch.

to another study conducted in the United States, 2- to 3-year-olds consume 2 1/2 hours of television per dayand 82 minutes of video in addition to that. The total media consumption

Now the question : is watching tv beneficial or harmful?

Halloween Costumes

What are you planning to do in October? Yup, what I mean is on Halloween night. Do you plan to wear any costume? I don’t think I am going to wear any. I am too old to wear any sexy halloween costumes. However it doesn’t stop me to search for ideas to make Halloween costume for my daughters.

Hahahahaha! Very ugly costume. No need to buy one, just ask him to wear his pajamas, white shirt, and his “too tight” vest. As for the mask. No need to wear mask, I think he looks like Shrek already.

Stop The Cough At Night

I received this email from my husband:

Back to My Normal Weight

Last week, somehow I managed to get my original weight back. I can wear back all my old clothes. My gynea asked me how I managed to get back my original weight so fast? To tell you the truth, I don’t have secret recipe. I only gain 10 kg when I was pregnant. It’s all in the tummy. When the baby is out, I only have 5 kg to reduce, and now all gone.

Actually, since I was teenager I was always under weight. Even I ate a lot, I still could not gain weight. If I am not wrong, I was only 42 kg, and my height is 162 cm. Only when I lived in US, I gain some weight to become 48 kg, and I maintain it until now.

I don’t exercise. At one time, when I walked every morning with my hubby, my weight reduced to 46 kg. Then when I got pregnant, the first few months I got bad morning sickness. I lost weight further, until my gynea asked me to eat more, or eat whatever food I fancy. At that time, my hubby had to think hard to persuade me to eat. Since all the food that I craved he could not find in Malaysia, he searched for the recipe in the internet and cooked for me.

Anyway, I am happy that I don’t have overweight problem.

Mommy Is Working

It’s been almost 7 years since I become stay at home mom. Previously I was working in the cookware company as a brand manager. I travelled a lot overseas, met a lot of interesting people, did product launching, sometimes I could see myself in the newspaper. It’s a very busy life and yet very interesting.

When I got married with my husband, I had to move to different country since he is from Malaysia and I am from Indonesia. Then I had my first daughter. Life is totally different since then. From working woman, now I am become a housewife and a mother. But one thing is the same. I still can earn money.

She is One Month Old Today!

My Newborn is one month old today. She is asking for milk every 3 hours. Sometimes less than 3 hours she’s already screamed. Every feed is about 90 ml or 3 oz. Thus total feed for 24 hours is about 21 to 24 oz. It is a lot for one month old baby, don’t you think?

When she was just born she was only 3.2 kg and 50 cm long. I don’t know her weight now, but I am pretty sure she gains a lot. Tomorrow we are going to see her pediatrician for check up and to get her second hepatitis B injection.

Actually she was much smaller than her sister. Her sister was 3.6 kg and 56 cm long when she was born. So probably she drinks a lot of milk in order to catch up.

My company had an exhibition booth there, where I had to stand there the whole day to meet our existing customers and showed them our new products, however, beside that we were also hoping to get new customers. This was the first drawing of my older daughter. Sure, she drew something before, but it didn't make any sense at all. This was her first time she drew something that make sense. She said she drew herself attending a party. You can see a person there and a cake with candle on top.

Is newborn need to drink plain water?

When my older daughter born, this question never occurred to me, so somehow I never gave her any plain water. However, later on, I sometimes saw a mother gave her baby plain water. Then it hits me. Does baby, specially newborn, need plain water beside the one already mixed in the formula milk?

Then the other day, my mother in law told me to give my new born daughter plain water, since she “seems thirsty”.

I tried to googled that question, and this is my findings:

Baby less than 6 months are not suppose to drink plain water. They should have enough water from the one that mixed in the formula milk or from your breast milk. The reason is because water has no nutrient and giving water will fills their tummy so they don’t want any milk.

Of course, if your baby has constipation, or some other problem and your pediatrician advise you to give extra plain water, you must follow.

Mama, Me, and Baby

This is what my older daughter drew 2 days ago. When I asked her who are they. She said, it’s Mama, me and baby. I could see me and her, but at first I could not see the baby, until she pointed out that the baby was in my lap.

Use Your Bar Soap Until Totally Gone

If you are using soap bar, don’t throw away when the bar become too small. You still can use it until finish. How?

You soak the soap with water about 5 minutes, or until become slightly soft. Now, you can attach that small bar of soap with the new one by pressing it together until the small soap stick together to a new one. Now you can use the new bar soap as usual. When the new one become too small, you can repeat the process.

With this method, you have always used up your bar soap until it is totally gone.

Jet Lag

Since my husband is back from Europe last Sunday until now, he still could not get over his jetlag. At night could not sleep, only able to sleep about 6 in the morning and only woke up at noon.

Based on my experienced travelling to different country with time difference, I notice that normally I did not have any problem with Jetlag when I was there, but when I arrived back home, I always have problem adjusting the time. I don’t know why.

Anyway, because hubby can not wake up in the morning, nobody drive my daughter go to her kindy. It happen also that my father in law car need to be repaired for a whole week. Thus, he also can not drive her.

Hopefully everything back to normal next week.

Three weeks after the tragic loss of Reilly, Chad and Michelle made a commitment to give back to the community that had helped them in their time of need, and set up a foundation in Reilly's name. The Reilly C. Bush Memorial Foundation was established to carry on Reilly's spirit and to enrich the community by teaching children to help other children.

It’s a very empowering story and it makes you realized that we, normal people, can make a different. So do you!

Lasik

My friend just told me that she is going to have Lasik. When I told my husband about it and asked him whether he is interested to have Lasik, he said that Lasik is for rich people, or for woman who wants to look pretty. As for him, well, he is happy with his glasses and no need to spend a fortune to do Lasik.
